I saw some articles a few years ago saying that the guys behind Iron Man were weary of Marvel trying to make a movie version of Thor. Their fear was that the believability of men in high tech armored suits was much different than the believability (and thus quality) of a movie about Norse gods flying around with magical hammers....
Valid points.... another point is that the Thor comic was never particularly interesting to me.... and the same bland qualities that didn't appeal to me in print appear in this live action version... Thor has no alter ego, no weakness, no foibles that make interesting Super Heros interesting.... (e.g. the Hulk and Spider-Man).
As much as the film version tries to dazzle you with special effects and brings in some Oscar quality actors (Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman).... but, Oscar quality or not, superficial characters with no backstory and no character development left me un-enthused overall...
It definitely felt like they cut a lot of establishment stuff out to try and keep the overall run time down to 2 hours.... and its only saving grace, the fancy special effects get overloaded too by the end...
